Roots I
Roots I
This painting is my first attempt to paint the aerial roots of the banyan trees. The trees in Hawai‘i are so very sculptural. One Maui banyan tree, eight feet tall when it was brought from India in 1873, today stands over 60 feet high and has 12 major trunks in addition to its core. The tree stretches over a 200-foot area and shades 2/3 of an acre.
Banyans feel magical to me. Their aerial roots stretch down toward the earth, reaching for a ground they trust will support their continued outward growth. I often look to find the magical creatures that must call these trees home.
May you always remember to put down roots when branching out in new directions, or when reaching a little further than you normally reach. Keep reaching, keep stretching, keep growing, and keep on putting down roots.
