This painting is my second in the series of paintings of the aerial roots of the banyan trees. The trees in Hawai‘i are so very sculptural. One Maui banyan tree, eight feet tall when it was brought from India in 1873, today stands over 60 feet high and has 12 major trunks in addition to its core. The tree stretches over a 200-foot area, shading 2/3 of an acre.

While painting this piece, several thoughts kept running through my head: “putting down roots,” “feeling my roots,” “sending out new roots.”

No matter where we are in life, roots help to ground us, giving us a sense of belonging. It can be argued that in order to move forward, we must first put down roots so that we have a firm grasp of where we are.

May these roots remind you of your own roots, so that you too can move forward with joy and with ease.
