While painting at my easel in December, I spied something bright red at the base of the Traveler’s Palm at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Wondering if I’d missed seeing one of the holiday decorations, I discovered the stem of the plant was candy apple red.

The plant’s fan leaves had been leaning over the walkway and needed a trim. Because the fronds were trimmed so close to the stem, it turned bright red. As it heals, the colors have changed to a dull red, then violet, and brown. When the sunlight hits the stem and leaves just right, they still turn a vibrant blue green. Thus the rainbow of this traveler’s palm.
