First Breath

First Breath

from $45.00

Endangered Humpback Whales visit the Hawaiian Islands November through March, traveling great distances to enjoy our warm waters, feed on plankton, and give birth to their calves.

We enjoy watching the whales teach their young how to live in the waters. Calves learn to communicate using their body, echolocation, and their voice, their whale songs. The ways they flap their tails or breach the water (soar up out of the water, in part, or sometimes their whole body) might be playful forms of communication.

The birth of a baby whale is often attended by a nursemaid or midwife whale. She’s often the one who coaxes the calf to the surface to take its first breath.
