Hawaiian Basking Turtle
Hawaiian Basking Turtle
Green Sea Turtles (known as honu in Hawai`i) have been protected in the US since 1978. Because of this protection, they have no fear of people and are often seen in our waters and on our beaches. This is not true at all South Pacific islands.
Turtles are excellent navigators, able to swim up to 20 mph. Perhaps their fast swim, combined with their ease around people gives them the comfort to bask on our beaches.
Their basking behavior is unique to the turtles in Hawai‘i, the Galapagos Islands, and Australia. Scientists believe they bask on the beaches to help regulate their body temperature.
Are you surprised to know that Honu have nerve endings in their carapace (shell)? Be gentle near these giants of the sea & you will be rewarded with their presence.
