Tako Bell
Tako Bell
“Tako” is the Japanese word for octopus, a cephalopod mollusk with two eyes and four pair of arms. It has a hard beak, and its mouth is at the center point of its arms. It has no skeleton. Each tako can have up to 35 different camouflage patterns. This tako changed colors & patterns so fast, that I didn’t realize until looking at photos later how fast it was changing.
Most aquarium tako are caught in the wild; this one lived much of its life at the Waikiki Aquarium. When born, a tako is about the size of a grain of rice. They live for six months to five years, depending upon the species and whether or not they are living in captivity (they live longer in captivity). This particular type of tako has a 14-month lifespan.
Reproduction is often a contributing cause of death. Males live for only a few months after mating (if they survive the process at all), and females die shortly after their eggs hatch, due to starvation. Like many human women, they take better care of their eggs than they do themselves.
Aquariums feed the tako by placing food into containers that the tako must figure out how to open. This stimulation keeps these intelligent animals healthy.
Why “Tako Bell”? Why not, they’re certainly agile enough to ring a few bells!
