Though it grows to great heights, the Traveler’s Palm is not a tree, but a plant related to the banana, heliconia, and bird of paradise. It’s often called the White Bird of Paradise.The plant sends out sucker roots giving it the ability to “walk its footprint” outside the initial stem, creating a family of plants. While drawing the painting, I realized that the leaves are shaped like canoe paddles — a reference to traveling? In this painting, the leaves shield the white flower plumes of light.

The Traveler’s Palm earned its name not because it walks, nor because of the paddle-shaped leaves. Instead, it is thus named because the magnificent V-shaped array of leaves funnels falling rains to be stored in the stem. So much rain is stored that a parched traveler can tap into the stem to reach the water hidden within.
